Hot Take: Sustainable Fashion: The ultimate greenwashing and how to get it right
Fashion is said to both reflect and steer culture. In an era of escalating environmental concerns and growing consumer interest in sustainable choices, the fashion industry has taken great strides to stay on trend. Brands producing everything from swimsuits to sneakers, wedding dresses to yoga mats shout their sustainability credentials from the rooftops, peppering their advertisements with terms like carbon neutral, organic, vegan, ethically made, grandchildren-compatible, and of course, the pervading “sustainable.”
What substance lies behind the sustainability labeling? In too many cases, far too little. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams. While people bought 60% more garments in 2014 than in 2000, they only kept the clothes for half as long. What’s more, 85% of all textiles are sent to the landfill each year. A burgeoning attentiveness to sustainability has largely failed to make a dent in these environmental challenges.
But resigning ourselves to fast fashion out of skepticism for anything that promises to be a better option won’t help. What then can be done to fashion a reformed apparel industry? How can we make fashion’s next season one whose trends pair well with planetary health? A few ideas to keep an eye on include:
Retiring vague labels and demanding disclosure: Let’s put “sustainability” in the Goodwill bin and dedicate the cleared space to requiring businesses to disclose their lobbying efforts and publish mandatory environmental stewardship reports. Hold greenwashers and marketing agencies accountable to their use of buzzwords. Patagonia is owning up to its role in producing emissions, and ditching the word “sustainable” along the way.
Pricing negative externalities: Carbon and water should be taxed to include social costs, thereby forcing innovation in production processes and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy. The UK’s recent recommendation of a tax on virgin plastic, which would cover polyester, offers an example. For the fashion industry, such a rule would increase the price of synthetics, making natural materials more attractive.
Adopting extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation: These laws require manufacturers to pay up front for the costs of disposing their goods. California is a leader in this arena, with its EPR Act covering several categories including carpets, mattresses, and paint. The law requires that producers of the covered materials sold, imported, or distributed in California move away from single-use plastics, rethink plastic packaging design, and ensure that all material be recyclable or compostable by 2032.
Enforcing supply chain commitments: Fashion brands must be mandated to share and abide by supply chain commitments. In New York, a proposed law would require every fashion retail seller and manufacturer with over $100 million in annual revenue to conduct supply chain mapping and track carbon emissions alongside other social and environmental impact targets. Those that fail to comply could be fined 2% of revenue.
If upping the ante through these policy mechanisms feels contradictory to the voluntary, market-based approach to sustainable fashion that has long prevailed in the popular imagination, it should. Relying on consumers to either pour time and money into sifting through claims to make values-aligned purchases or kick their shopping habits altogether is not enough. Nor are investors, with their short time horizons and index-based performance goals, coming to save the day by pressuring companies to reform. It’s time to demand structural, enforceable change so that what we wear won’t wear down the world.
