An intimate portrait of climate activist Ken Ward. Ken breaks the law as a last resort and with great trepidation, to fulfill what he sees as his personal obligation to future generations. The film follows Ken through a series of civil disobedience direct actions, culminating with his participation in the coordinated action that shut down all the U.S. tar sands oil pipelines on October 11, 2016. Facing 20 years in prison for his actions, the film reveals both the personal costs and also the fulfillment that comes from following one’s moral calling.

💪 Climate Heroes in Your Neighborhood with Matt Scott

There are climate heroes among us everywhere, but many go unnoticed in the thrum of everyday life. Matt Scott, director of storytelling and engagement at the global nonprofit climate solutions resource Project Drawdown, has been shining a light on the work of such people in cities across the country in his documentary short series “Drawdown’s Neighborhood.” In Atlanta, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and more, Scott lifts up underrepresented voices of those engaging in climate issues directly in their communities. And that diversity of voices—of women, Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color—is itself the point. “By passing the mic to underrepresented people working on the frontlines of climate change, we hope to share as many of these stories as possible while reshaping who society sees as climate heroes,” says Scott.

💸 Morgan Stanley Inclusive Ventures Lab (Due Mar. 15)

Morgan Stanley Inclusive Ventures Lab promotes financial inclusion and provides access to capital for early-stage tech companies, offering $250K to companies selected to their New York-based program in exchange for a 5% equity stake, along with access to networks, mentoring, and a tailored curriculum. Apply by March 15th.

🌇 $10M Empire Technology Prize (Due Mar. 24)

The Empire Technology Prize is focused on finding groundbreaking solutions to tackle the greatest single source of GHG emissions from New York’s tall buildings - heating. The Bloomberg Green Docs competition is open to all eligible filmmakers who would like to compete to win a $25,000 grand prize for a short climate documentary. We want to explore our climate future with documentaries that reveal the world we are making today.  Ecosystems are being restored and tomorrow’s zero-carbon communities are being formed.  At the same time, extremes in our habitats warn of cascading climate consequences.

🎬 Climate Film Festival Open Call (Due Jun. 3)

The Climate Film Festival (CFF) is New York City’s first film festival dedicated to climate in all its forms. From narrative and documentary features to experimental shorts and music videos, CFF harnesses the transformative power of motion pictures, showcasing new and established voices, classic climate films, and energizing, human stories. Our inaugural festival will take place from September 20-22, 2024 during the opening weekend of Climate Week NYC.

📣 Journalism Mixer: Amplifying Community Voices in Climate Reporting

Join us for a climate journalism mixer at Acción Latina / El Tecolote as we delve into the critical intersection of local journalism and climate change. The event will begin with a conversation led by Ezra David Romero, Climate Reporter at KQED, who will discuss how climate change is in every beat and why covering climate change matters, especially by people in communities. This session is a collaboration between KQED, Acción Latina, and Uproot and is open to journalists, media professionals, environmental advocates, community leaders, and anyone passionate about climate reporting.

This week we’ve got some major news on the potential sea level rise across California - averaging 1.2 feet by 2050 and upwards of 6.6 feet by the end of the century! While these numbers are dire, local municipalities are taking matters into their own hands to adapt to this changing reality. The City of San Francisco released a $13 billion plan in partnership with the US Army Corps to elevate the Embarcadero and all its buildings by 7 feet. We hope this is a combination of gray and green infrastructure to protect some of the Bay Area’s most beloved neighborhoods - and we’re excited to continue following the project as it progresses!
